Aksharnandan School:
‘Aksharnandan’ school, set in a relatively quiet and peaceful area of Pune offers an interesting platform for Experimental Theatre. The Theatre space is interesting as it does not confine to the definition of a regular proscenium. The stage is sufficiently large also with the audience capacity of about 200. The Theatre space could be utilized in various ways; it can cater as a regular proscenium, thrust or as ‘Theatre in a round’. Apart from the indoor stage, the playground and its adjoining area which consists of a flight of stairs have also been used to stage plays. The school has been generous in allowing various theatre groups to utilize this space. This space not only excites and challenges various Theatre groups but also is refreshing to the audience. In last 3-4 years, ’Aksharnandan’ has gained popularity among Experimental Theatre enthusiasts. The tranquility of the premises, the acoustics of the auditorium, the flexibility the space provides has resulted in it being one of the best places to showcase Experimental plays. Natak Company realised the potential of this space, and has used it effectively for their plays Binkamache Sanwad, as well as Ek Divas Mathakade, which is performed on the playground, using the surroundings as a set design.
