Synopsis:
‘Cycle’ is the story of a father’s struggle to keep his promise made to his son. School master Kale has promised his son that he will get him a cycle if he scores 90 marks in Sanskrit. Ram has been fulfilling his end of the promise for the past 3 years but his father is barely able to make ends meet with his meager salary. Finally, he decides to get him a cycle come what may. The shopkeeper convinces him to buy a second – hand cycle in excellent condition. But that cycle has a story of its own.. Adapted from an eponymous short story by Vyankatesh Madgulkar, ‘Cycle’ is an emotional episode in a loving family’s life.
Director's Note:
When I heard this story by Vyankatesh Madgulkar for the first time, I could not stop the tears flowing from my eyes. Very few stories have had such an impact on me - emotional as well as visual. Each character, situation, location just stood in front of my eyes. I could hear the ambient sounds, sense the characters happiness,tension or fear. And the credit goes to the writer and his story.
Adapting and directing this play was like a breeze- a very soothing,calming experience. With such a strong source material at hand, all I had to do was let Madgulkar tell his story through me.
