Synopsis:
Every human being continuously generates some waste and adds to the overall waste. The problem of waste management in India is getting serious day by day. Most of us don’t even know where the waste generated by us goes and what happens to it. The waste collected from our locality is taken far away from the city to a place called a landfill and is dumped there. A landfill is a huge desert of garbage spread over a large area. The people working on a landfill who segregate waste (Kabaadi) which can be recycled are called rag pickers. These people are the last collectors of the big chain segregating useful things from the garbage. Rag pickers have themselves selected this as a profession for earning their livelihood. These rag pickers are different from the uniformed municipality workers of the government. Many of them work anywhere throughout India travelling and most of them don’t even have any identity proof.
The rag pickers, like us, are human beings, they also have emotions like us. But they live in our surroundings in a separate independent world.
Kabaadi-Uncut isthe story of a fourteen year old girl ragpicker named Barbie. We also see her relation with her mother, her friends and other people working on the landfill. It is about the small joys that Barbie discovers on the landfill. Ragpickers are born on the landfill, and they live their whole life on the landfill. Their world is the landfill, till they die. Our journey begins after Barbie finds a video camera in the landfill.

Writer's Note:
There are many worlds around us apart from the world we live in. People have their own worlds, their own bubbles. They are trying to find the meaning of life in with their own perspective. We cannot see their world as easily. But what do these people do? How do they survive? What are their problems and joys? Do they have different laws and rules? Kabaadi-Uncut materialized while I was trying to find answers to these questions.
Man has progressed at a tremendous speed in the last few centuries, but while doing so, has unintentionally created a lot of garbage. We have conveniently ignored all this garbage. But we have now reached a point where everything around us is just a desert of garbage… we are surrounded by landfills. How long will we ignore it?
Whatever garbage we create every single day just goes and sits on that huge pile. People that earn their living by segregating this garbage are known as ragpickers. They collect and sell the stuff they find on a landfill. It is a huge market. Ragpickers are an important cog in the wheel of recycling. However, their life has become as cheap as the garbage that they live in. The play talks about the Government and the society’s view towards ragpickers on one hand, and their struggle for survival on the other.

Director's Note:
Waste is an inseparable part of human being and each one creates some sort of waste every day. I became more alert of this fact when I realized that some people called ragpickers earn their livelihood working on this waste created by us. It made me more curious about the site of their work, the landfill. The story gave me a lot of scope to present all the factors with an interesting texture, its background with a couple of interesting characters involved, which attracted me a lot. We have given a form of docu-drama to the play through which we come across the life-style of ragpickers, their problems, way of thinking and perspective towards life.
In the process we came across lot of articles, short films, documentaries on ragpickers but the most interesting part which helped us a lot were the visits to the landfill, chatting with the rag pickers present there, and fighting with the inhuman atmosphere of the landfill. I can confidently say that its a team effort & each member plays a significant role in shaping the play and adding to its genuineness.
