Synopsis:
The play is a story of a young medical graduate who gets acquainted with the term “Placebo” while pursuing his medical education. The concept of Placebo fascinates him to such extent that he starts looking for its resonance in each and every aspect of his life. In this process, he confronts his dilemma regarding the belief system, superstitions and sexuality in his own way. The protagonist like any other individual is compelled to believe the certain definition of success. The protagonist indulges himself in this concept to such an extent that it starts having negative impact on him. Is it really worth to waste the important time by being joyous by expressing the things caused due to internal violence? At the beginning the protagonist of this play is alone and is addressing to conference which is a part of his illusion. Here he narrates his real as well as imaginary experiences to the audience. At the end of the play, his illusion breaks as he awaits his death.
Writer's Note:
Placebo- I shall Please; Nocebo- I shall Harm. These take place when one completely believes in something and his mind trains the body and makes the body believe in it. How can the above terms be used in the daily walks of life? We have tried to showcase how the protagonist is trapped in the belief system. The worthless time in one’s valuable day or by claiming that nostalgia is insignificant he indulges himself in the terms of death and time and strives to pass by the time. And an attempt has been made to structuralize all of this in the play titled Nocebo
Director's Note:
After reading the script we felt like directing this play as it attempts to play with the mindset of an individual forcing him to think and rethink on his own belief system. As it widely known that negativity has a very strong attraction on any human being, so our message through this play is everyone has their own set of perceptions and how a negative thought can harm someone’s life. The script depicted a lot of things happening in a spur of a moment at many fronts and to deliver the same to the audiences without confusing them was the real challenge. The set of this play also plays a pivotal role in making the audiences to understand the same. The characters appeared on the stage as and when the protagonist thinks about them. For this we designed the stage as the brain of the protagonist. And for the same purposes the set was not completely realistic and the installations were perfect to depict the complexities in protagonist’s life. The emotions of the protagonist are the main reason for the story to develop which are formed due to the various characters which are directly or indirectly related to him.
