Synopsis:
Since the beginning of Marathi theatre has been conscious towards social issues. However it seldom touches the chronic and bewildering conflict between Brahmins and non-Brahmins, Shivacharitra ani Ek, a two parts play is centered on this very issue taking into consideration all exhaustive nature of cast system and necessity and possibility of transcending it, the play attempts to take these issues to artistic high. The play is also a critic of those tendencies that make history a battle field for their interest laden politics. It underlines the need on the part of younger generation to understand the real nature of cast conflict and to distanciate itself from it. Taking into consideration the traditionality of cast system itself, traditional forms such as ‘kitran and powada’ are used. The play while accepting the legitimate clarity of conflicting cast succeeds as impartial and artful expression.

Director's Note:
When we were in search of a script for a new play, we came across Dr. Sadanand More's "Shivacharitra" which was written in the year 2006. Yet the core of it felt quite contemporary to us. Thus we decided to interpret it in our own way, without losing its original essence. At this point of time, with this play we could realize the opportunity to analyze this conflict between the Brahmins and non Brahmins which is very important and integral conflict of Maharashtra and thus of each one of us. This play talks about a historian and his associate who are struggling to break the caste boundaries in today's times and want to put forth the truth in context of Shivacharitra. Interestingly this play talks about history of Shivacharitra writing (Biography of Shivaji) instead of history of Shivaji Maharaj. While directing and dealing with this play we came across several conflicting situations, questions, which gave birth to the Second part of the play. In the second part we also made an attempt to understand current complex and changing cast identities. This issue is very less discussed as if it is a taboo in our society, due to this it remains unsolved. With the help of this play we are making an attempt to break these boundaries.
