Synopsis:
A French writer, Jean Giono, wrote a story about a man who relentlessly planted trees on the planes of Alps, for an amazingly long period, of about forty to fifty years, with the only motive of the transformation of a dyeing, barren landscape.
The story begins with the writer roaming in the wild Alps. He comes across a single old man working on its planes all alone. – a shepherd, Elzéard Bouffier ,who plants seeds all day long as his sheep graze around him. Devising new techniques, constantly pre-occupied with thoughts of change, of how the plantations could become more effective, the man is unstoppable! Despite losing his wife and his only son, the man continues planting trees with his dynamic energy and will power. Unfortunately after this first visit the author parts with the shepherd for he gets recruited in the First World War. Our author finds him a little crazed in the beginning and forgets him for that. But when he comes back from the First World War, the metamorphosis of the once dry, barren land into a lush green, growing forest is spectacular.
He experiences an incident where the forest officers ruthlessly orders the area to the be under the protection of the State ,without even knowing that the area which was now lush green wasn’t created solely by the nature but because of the consistent effort by Elzéard Bouffier.Fortunately the officers don’t do anything except for this thoughtless decision.
The writer keeps being drawn to the new beautiful world that, this one single devoted man has created by his undying endeavor.
Elzéard Bouffier dies peacefully in 1947 at the hospital in Banon.

Director's Note:
The story in its authenticity is of the period between the two world wars. And even then, it appears absolutely contemporary as basically the values of a continuous, constant, dedicated work; rather life is still what attracts us. It is still as rare, as it was then, and it is still what one would want to strive for. Materially, today we live in the age of global warming and climate change. It is trees that will save us from the horrendous outcomes that are predicted. The play does in no way make an effort to educate us about the necessity of tree plantation, but in its subtlety of presentation touches the environmental chord of every individual amongst us. In this way, on the one hand the whole story is very specific to the particular time and culture of its setting but on the other, it is a story about all of us, every one of us, it is a story of this world. The play is an attempt at its further beautification as we see a similarity in an artist’s being and that of the man who planted trees. Thus, the third and the extremely valuable angle of art that comes to us.
